Abstract

This paper publishes research, conducted by the University of Surrey for the National Union of Students and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, on the role of student leadership. The methods used were eight research questions underpinned by; an analysis of relevant data already held by the NUS; a large scale quantitative survey, to provide data from a wide range of higher education institutes (HEIs) and students’ union representatives; two in-depth focus groups at each of 10 case study HEIs; an analysis of relevant documents from each of the 10 participating HEIs; four focus groups with specific roleholders within students’ unions; and a literature review which drew on academic sources as well as those from the Leadership Foundation, NUS and other key stakeholders.
